Growing up in the era of “fat free” everything…(think Diet Coke, goldfish, graham crackers and Yoplait) I was taught to be very wary of consuming fat. The message I received was “eating fat makes you fat”. Eating healthy entailed using non fat cooking sprays, eating fat free chips and crackers, avocados and nuts were a “special treat” and consuming butter or olive oil was unthinkable. Staying away from fats lead to being hungry all the time and having to consume A LOT of “empty” fat free calories to feel full. This made getting to and staying at a healthy weight “difficult” which meant I had to implement and rely on routines rooted in deprivation and control to maintain my physique. Not exactly a sustainable lifestyle.
As I expanded my knowledge and understanding of nutrition and the role fat plays in weight loss, energy expenditure, satiation, etc., I started experimenting with adding more fat into my diet. The first thing I noticed was how full I would feel after each meal. I could have my BbE Avocado Green Smoothie at 9:00 or 10:00 am, workout, teach a class, have a protein shake post workout and not be hungry for lunch until late afternoon. It helped stabilize my blood sugar and energy and I didn’t feel like I had to restrict my eating until the next meal or snack. I could tune in, listen to my hunger levels and trust my body. I also started to burn more fat during my workouts and as a result, my arms, abs and legs leaned out. I felt better, had more energy and also look more toned and defined! Adding more fat into my day is one of the most awesome nutrition shifts I’ve experienced and it all started with this green smoothie!

BbE GREEN AVOCADO SMOOTHIE
- 1 cup coconut almond milk or preferred non dairy milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cup spinach
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp Madhava Organic Agave Five or 2 pitted dates
Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth.
Pour into a cup.
*Madhava Organic Agave Five can be found at most health food stores or online.
